Guide · Fairness
Provably fair,
explained.
Every round is locked with a fingerprint before you play. Afterwards you can check that nothing changed, without trusting anyone.
The idea
Sealed before, checkable after
A provably fair round has a secret, the server seed, picked before you play. You are shown only its SHA-256 fingerprint. A fingerprint is easy to compute from the seed, and practically impossible to reverse or to match with a different seed. So once you have seen it, the seed behind it cannot be swapped.
Your own client seed and a round counter, the nonce, are mixed in, so the result depends on something you control too. When the round is over the server seed is revealed, and you can check both things yourself: that it matches the fingerprint, and that it produces the result you got.
Step by step
Check a round yourself
Before you play: note the fingerprint
The game shows the server seed's SHA-256 fingerprint (the “server seed hash”) before the round starts. After you play: get the revealed seed
Once the round ends, the server seed is revealed together with the round's client seed and nonce.Paste them into the verifier
Open wagerblaze.com/provably-fair, paste the three values and press Verify.Read the two checks
The verifier hashes the revealed seed and compares it with the fingerprint you saw, then recomputes the result from the seeds. If both match, the round was decided before you played and was not changed.
Try it
A real pair you can check
This seed really produces this fingerprint
Server seed:
ab02b46eedb2c9edc2c6d21c134dac2dd09f7970f152abb5a17003492edaf44f
SHA-256 fingerprint:
dddbb8fdf59c1bd9e20562bce30500f2835c1ba8a18d08fe4e11786faa3dec5e
Paste the seed into any SHA-256 tool and you will get exactly that fingerprint. Change a single character and the fingerprint changes completely. That is the whole point.
Details
For the technically curious
The result is computed as HMAC-SHA256 with the server seed as the key and client_seed:nonce as the message. The first 13 hexadecimal digits (52 bits) are divided by 252 to give a number between 0 and 1, which each game turns into its outcome. The verifier page prints the formula it uses.
